Tragically, about 3% of children in the nation lack a bed to sleep in at night. Sleep in Heavenly Peace, a national non-profit 501(c)3, recognizes that beds are a basic need for the proper physical, emotional and mental support that a child needs. SHP’s motto is “No kid sleeps on the floor in our town.”

A number of children in Lincoln County are without proper beds and may be sleeping in undesirable conditions such as the floor, on an air mattress or with other family members. “Many people don’t realize the need,” said Tina Hudson, SHP area coordinator. In an effort to provide beds for those kids, local volunteers have a goal of building 50 beds for local kids ages 3-17, with the first ‘Build Day’ on Oct. 15. The construction location will be announced at a later date.

Earlier this year Hudson contacted the South Pittsburg chapter of SHP, and through a partnership with them, local volunteers will donate time and muscle to methodically construct bunk beds for dozens of local kids. Volunteers will help build, deliver and set up beds. Johnny Collins and Steve Miller head up the build team in Lincoln County.

“We already have 30 children we’re building beds for,” Collins said. Under the guidance of SHP chapter team members, volunteers will be taught how to build bunks via an assembly line setup. Volunteers have an opportunity to learn how to use woodworking tools such as saws, drills, sanders, hammers and many other tools. They also learn how to measure, level, make true woodcuts, sand and stain wood.

“We need volunteers for the Build Team, which would commit to being at each Build Day to help in training and overseeing during the build process,” Hudson said. Volunteers are also needed for the Install Team to deliver the beds to the child’s home, set them up and place a new mattress, pillow, sheet set and comforter on each bed. It takes an average of 20 minutes to assemble a bed.

“We are needing monetary donations,” said Hudson, president of Hands of Mercy. Donations may be mailed to Hands of Mercy, PO Box 1215, Fayetteville, TN 37334 or on the website handsofmercycenter.com. “We are asking for all donations to come through Hands of Mercy to help with designating funds for the Lincoln County partnership. It costs $250 to build one bed,” Hudson said.

Additional needs include donations of new bedding, twin size pillows, sheets and comforters geared toward different ages. SHP tries to match the bedding with the colors or character themes the child likes. These items can be dropped off at Hands of Mercy from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. on Tuesday or Thursday. or from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. Monday through Friday at First Baptist Church.

More volunteers are needed for the Vetting Team to vet requests for beds and make a site visit.

“Bed requests would need to be made at shpbeds.org as they are sorted by zip code and forward to us at Hands of Mercy,” Hudson said.
